Windows 7 Rocks! |
|
Protect Yourself for Free for Another Year! |
Usually we recommend users
wait up to a year to upgrade to new Windows Operating Systems. This gives needed
time for Microsoft and other software companies to work out major bugs
associated with the new OS. For the first time, however, we are saying GET
Windows 7 NOW! That’s right, as hard as it is to do, we’ve been majorly
impressed! Let’s sum it up by saying we love how much more user friendly Windows
7 is and think you will too.
At this point, we’ve installed many new systems with Windows 7 and performed
numerous upgrades from Vista. It has been a pleasure! If you have an old XP
system you've been holding on to trying to avoid Vista, you can rest easy, it is
time to get a new Windows 7 system. And If you have a Vista system, you may
seriously want to consider getting a new system or upgrading to Windows 7.
Vista can be upgraded to
Windows 7 with ease. However, XP systems are a bit more difficult. With the XP
OS there is no direct "upgrade path" to Windows 7. Given this, XP users have a
choice of three approaches:
A. Stay Put:
·
Stay with your
XP OS until it is in danger of becoming outdated (another year to two years)
but, honestly, don’t wait too long or you will run into nagging obsolescence
issues. Or,
B. Wipe & Reload:
·
Back up all
data (documents, pictures, music, video, data files, Quicken/QuickBooks files,
favorites, email, etc.)
·
Perform a
fresh install of Windows 7
·
Reinstall all
of your applications, installing print drivers, configuring email accounts, etc.
·
Restore all
backed up data. Or,
C. Double Upgrade:
·
Upgrade your
XP system to Vista (many newer XP systems have a Vista serial
number on the computer as well as Vista software that also came with the system,
allowing you to install Vista without having to purchase the upgrade software)
·
Then upgrade to
Windows 7 from your new Vista install
Here is more information
from Microsoft about upgrading XP systems:
Upgrading from Windows XP to Windows 7
Be forewarned, upgrading to
Windows 7 from XP is somewhat complicated and time consuming – not something
most lay users want to attempt and can normally take 4 – 6 hours of our labor to
accomplish. Consider this Microsoft’s way at getting back at you for avoiding
the Vista nightmare. And, yes, it’s still worth it.
A Few Very Important Things to Note:
A very
important step to determining if your system is “Windows-7-Ready” is the
Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor. Using this Upgrade Advisor is extremely
important as it will tell you if your system has the hardware it needs to
run Windows 7 – as well as what version of Windows 7 you will need for the
upgrade. Both XP and Vista users can download and run this Upgrade Advisor
program. When completed, it will give you a report of all detected issues
regarding your hardware and software.
WARNING
to Vista users: If you have the wrong version of Windows 7 upgrade software
for the version of Vista you are upgrading from, you will not be able
to upgrade. The Upgrade Advisor will tell you what the correct
version is that you need to purchase for upgrading to Windows 7. If
you purchase the wrong upgrade software and open it, you will not be able to
return it or get a refund.
Older and less-expensive systems may not have or be able to
support enough RAM to run Windows 7. We recommend 4GIG minimum.
Older and less-expensive systems may not have video cards
that can support the new Aero video interface included in Windows 7. If the
Upgrade Advisor says your video card is not compatible, then you will need
our consultation to determine what your other options are.
Rumor has it that QuickBooks 9 is incompatible with Windows
7, forcing users to purchase or acquire an upgrade QuickBooks 10.
If you have questions about
your Upgrade Advisor Report, or how to proceed, please call us at (805) 966-2966
or email us a
mrpink@computershrink.com. If you can save a copy of the report and attach
it to the email, that is very helpful.
